Everyone knows windshields are made of safety glass, but the interesting part is that what really got the ball rolling to improve windshield safety was a man named Pane. I know, it’s funny, right? In the lawsuit of Pane vs. Ford in 1917 the case was decided that Mr. Pane’s injuries were a direct result of his reckless driving (but not wreck-less, hence the accident lol). However, this led to automobile makers using hardened glass that shattered into “harmless” pieces in accidents instead. Then, a French scientist had discovered the process of laminating glass to further reinforce it and prevent shattering. In 1919, Ford required the use of laminated glass in all of his vehicles. So now ya know….it all started over a frivolous lawsuit!

My mother always taught me to make sure that the people around me who mean the most knew that they mean so much. That is exactly why My Car Doc wanted to say thank you to our customers, our clients, our friends. Many of you have watched my son Jack grow up with us and ask us about his adventures along the way. Some of you were even there before he was born. And that’s why we wanted to say thank you, for being with us through thick and thin, for sticking with us through our growing pains and working out the bugs while we figured out how to walk and now how to run. And that’s why My Car Doc bought 24 pizzas on Wednesday, buying lunch for several offices of our friends. A free lunch is a simple thing, not a grand gesture, but it comes from the heart. That’s why there are even more thank yous coming next week and all through the month of July My Car Doc will be passing out goodies all over town! Keep watching, your office may be next!

The Rookie

My Car Doc is proud to announce a service we’ve never had before. We now have an afternoon technician who is available to help you with services even after hours until 10 p.m. I’m pleased to introduce you all to Virgil Williams, Jr. Virgil has been doing a great job this past week picking up on how we do things at My Car Doc. If anyone has a preference for an evening service after 5:00 p.m., let us know and we’ll even save you 10% on the labor!

Car Tip

A lot of people are having problems with their vehicles running warm this time of year. You’d be amazed at how many people can fix that problem themselves with one simple step, saving time and money. The number one cause of overheating engines in the summer is simply a matter of hydration. Just like us, when our cars don’t have plenty of fluids, they suffer in the heat of the sun. When your motor is cool, check the coolant level. If your ride is thirsty, top it off with a UNIVERSAL coolant mixed 50/50 with water. Make sure your bottle says something like “Universal Coolant” or “Mixes with all makes and models” Mixing the wrong two kinds of coolants can cause some serious damage to the circulation system of the motor. If you have any questions, feel free to call me: 345-4528

That’s it for this edition. Until next time, keep it between the lines and all four of ‘em glued to the road.

Did you know that My Car Doc is a lot like a medical doctor? A surgeon every day holds in his very capable hands, the lives of each and every one of his patients. A mechanic does the same for you each and every time we work on your vehicle. If a surgeon cannot save a patient or if something goes wrong, the patient unfortunately dies. However, when your mechanic is under your car, he is responsible for the lives of every one of your passengers plus the lives of all the people in the cars around you.

So when you’re in need of automotive work, never be afraid to ask for references. After all, you would never leave your children with a babysitter you did not know or had not checked on, why would you treat your family’s safety any less importantly?

Check local sources like twitter, facebook, Angie’s List and other social media sources. These are the opinions of your friends, your neighbors, your coworkers. Find out what kind of experiences the person sitting next to you had with their mechanic. I’m very proud of the reputation My Car Doc has in our community. I’ve worked very hard to make sure we’re known as honest mechanics you can rely on and I’m willing to stand behind our work every single time.

Speaking of Facebook, are you a member of our Facebook Fan Page? Become a My Car Doc fan today and receive special discounts every Friday that you can’t get anywhere else!

Spring Cleaning Time!
Book an appointment with My Car Doc for brakes, tune up, or other major service and receive a FREE $10 gift card for dry cleaning! Dust off that old prom tux, you know, the one with the ruffles? Dry clean the quilts before putting them away for the summer. Or get that ink stain out of the pocket of your dress shirt. Either way, it’s on me! The gift card, not the stain. You know what I mean….

Car Trivia

1914 The Chevrolet bow-tie emblem first appears. There is speculation as to if the emblem came from the a stylized Swiss flag (the nation of orgin of co-founder Louis Chevrolet) or if co-founder Durant got the idea from a stylish wallpaper design he saw in a Paris hotel.

1914 The first electric traffic light was installed in Cleveland.

1923 Powered windshield wipers became standard equipment on many cars.

1939 Buick introduces turn signals as standard equipment although turn signal indicators had been installed in various forms since 1907 as optional equipment (more on this another time, it’s cool!).

1940 The first power windows were introduced by Packard.

1948 Harley Earl introduces the tail fin on the Cadillac. Fins don’t go away for over a decade.

1956 Electric door locks introduced on several luxury models.

1958 The first remote adjusted side view mirror.

Until the 1970s in France, Spain, and possibly other countries, many commercial vehicles had a green light mounted on the rear offside. This could be operated by the driver to indicate that it was safe for the following vehicle to overtake or pass the leading vehicle w/their green light lit.

Are you going to the Indiana Small Business Fair on May 11? There will be some great key note speakers, a wonderful chance for meeting other local business owners and best of all, it is FREE!
There will also be a food drive for Gleaner’s Food Bank, so we ask if you would please donate any kind of food item, hygiene items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, et cetera) , or even toiletry items (diapers, wipes, toilet tissue, et cetera) to the cause. The less fortunate folks here in our community will greatly appreciate your help and I know we’re a great community who can make a big difference!

Thanks a lot gang! Keep all four wheels on the road and we’ll see ya next week!
Sincerely,

I'm Sorry!
First and foremost, I'd like to apologize if you've tried to call me the last few days. We have updated our phone service to T-mobile from Revol. They were supposed to port the number over during the weekend to avoid any communication issues, but unfortunately that didn't take place until this week, making service sketchy for a few days. I deeply apologize if you've had trouble. However, I think (cross your fingers) that all that is over and done with now. Thanks!

CONGRATULATIONS To:
Tom Britt and Robby Slaughter! They correctly answered our Twitter Trivia Question yesterday to win a whopping 50% off service today! If you followed us (@MyCarDoc) you could win too!

HEALTH CARE? No way! It's CAR CARE!
Health Care reform has been all over the news lately. It's been the second trending topic on twitter behind the March Madness tournament. However, my fellow Americans, I am here today to stand up for the ones who can't speak for themselves, the silent majority who stand idly by while we dominate their lives. They wait on us patiently and give us their all, rarely asking for anything in return except to be fed. Most of the time, we don't even allow them to shower unless it's summertime. That's right, I'm talking about your automobile! Many of them may have foreign parents but are born right here in America (Suburu has a plant in Lafayette). But where's their healthcare reform? Who is going to stand up and speak for these silent servants who judge not, want not, and vote not? I AM! Dunt dun dun! (Insert dramatic music here. Trust me, it sounds great in my head.)

I know what you're thinking, but John, you're only one man! I ask you, are we ALL only one man? Well, except you ladies. Then you're only one lady. Well, not only in the sense of being miniscule or unimportant, but only in the sense of being singular. I mean....nevermind you know what I mean. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, only one man and all that. So....oh doggonit, now my notes are all mixed up. Okay folks, I'm gonna wing it.

I may be only one man, but I'm a Car Doc, Jim, not a politician! (Star Trek reference for anyone who didn't get that. Insert picture of Bones McCoy on the screen behind me at this point. Okay, so there's no screen, but you're imagining with me, right? Right? Oh boy...).

And what is a Car Doc to do? Well, I'm not just any car doc, I'm YOUR Car Doc. Well, kinda. I mean, the name of the business is MY Car Doc and not Your Car Doc, although if I'd have named it Your Car Doc instead of My Car Doc, maybe most people wouldn't think my name was Mike Hardock. A LOT of people do call me Mike. So much that I even answer to Mike. But anyway....doggonit, where was I again? Oh yeah, so I'm a Car Doc. No, not Ima Cardock, she's my cousin! HA! Anyway.....oh yeah, Car Care Reform!

I'm hereby establishing the CAR CARE REFORM MOVEMENT. Trust me, it's an fun movement, easy to do and even easier to learn and it works like this: Buy 4 oil changes. Save money. Let me repeat that: Buy 4 oil changes, SAVE MONEY. It is that simple. For the remainder of March, I'm offering a special deal where you can buy 4 oil changes, and you will save over $60. But you say, John, why 4? My local gas station makes me buy 10 cups of coffee before I get my freebie? Good question, I'm glad you asked. Most people travel on the average 12,000 miles per year. You should change your oil every 3,000 miles. So you should need 4 oil changes per year. So....you buy 2.5 oil changes and get 1.5 for free! That's NEARLY HALF OFF!
Summertime IS coming and everyone will be spending more on summer clothes, looking good, fireworks, and getting outta town. So why spend all that cash on your car when you can SAVE OVER $60. So there ya go, 4 oil changes for $99 plus tax.

The Car Care Revolution has begun! Viva la revolucion! (Can ya hear them honking out there in the parking lots? Isn't it so beautiful? I promised myself I wouldn't cry.....)

SAVE MORE $$
How else can you save money? Get better gas mileage, clean your injectors. Only $5 with service!

Wet Days!
How have those wipers been holding up? April showers bring May flowers but March was a bit damp, wasn't it? For about $12 you can get both your wiper blades replaced while we're there too!

FOOD DRIVE!
We're sponsoring a food drive at the Indiana Small Business Fair on May 11th!
Come out and help us fill up the truck for the less fortunate here in Indy.

First and foremost, I’d like to apologize if you’ve tried to call me the last few days. We have updated our phone service to T-mobile from Revol. They were supposed to port the number over during the weekend to avoid any communication issues, but unfortunately that didn’t take place until this week, making service sketchy for a few days. I deeply apologize if you’ve had trouble.

No way! It’s CAR CARE!

Health Care reform has been all over the news lately. It’s been the second trending topic on twitter behind the March Madness tournament. However, my fellow Americans, I am here today to stand up for the ones who can’t speak for themselves, the silent majority who stand idly by while we dominate their lives. They wait on us patiently and give us their all, rarely asking for anything in return except to be fed. Most of the time, we don’t even allow them to shower unless it’s summertime. That’s right, I’m talking about your automobile! Many of them may have foreign parents but are born right here in America (Suburu has a plant in Lafayette). But where’s their healthcare reform? Who is going to stand up and speak for these silent servants who judge not, want not, and vote not? I AM! Dunt dun dun! (Insert dramatic music here. Trust me, it sounds great in my head.)

I know what you’re thinking, but John, you’re only one man! I ask you, are we ALL only one man? Well, except you ladies. Then you’re only one lady. Well, not only in the sense of being miniscule or unimportant, but only in the sense of being singular. I mean….nevermind you know what I mean. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, only one man and all that. So….oh doggonit, now my notes are all mixed up. Okay folks, I’m gonna wing it.

I may be only one man, but I’m a Car Doc, Jim, not a politician! (Star Trek reference for anyone who didn’t get that. Insert picture of Bones McCoy on the screen behind me at this point. Okay, so there’s no screen, but you’re imagining with me, right? Right? Oh boy…).

And what is a Car Doc to do? Well, I’m not just any car doc, I’m YOUR Car Doc. Well, kinda. I mean, the name of the business is MY Car Doc and not Your Car Doc, although if I’d have named it Your Car Doc instead of My Car Doc, maybe most people wouldn’t think my name was Mike Hardock. A LOT of people do call me Mike. So much that I even answer to Mike. But anyway….doggonit, where was I again? Oh yeah, so I’m a Car Doc. No, not Ima Cardock, she’s my cousin! HA! Anyway…..oh yeah, Car Care Reform!

I’m hereby establishing the CAR CARE REFORM MOVEMENT. Trust me, it’s an fun movement, easy to do and even easier to learn and it works like this: Buy 4 oil changes. Save money. Let me repeat that: Buy 4 oil changes, SAVE MONEY. It is that simple. For the remainder of March, I’m offering a special deal where you can buy 4 oil changes, and you will save over $60. But you say, John, why 4? My local gas station makes me buy 10 cups of coffee before I get my freebie? Good question, I’m glad you asked. Most people travel on the average 12,000 miles per year. You should change your oil every 3,000 miles. So you should need 4 oil changes per year. So….you buy 2.5 oil changes and get 1.5 for free! That’s NEARLY HALF OFF!

Isn’t it so beautiful? I promised myself I wouldn’t cry…..)

SAVE MORE $$

How else can you save money? Get better gas mileage, clean your injectors. Only $5 with service!

Wet Days!

How have those wipers been holding up? April showers bring May flowers but March was a bit damp, wasn’t it? For about $12 you can get both your wiper blades replaced while we’re there too!

FOOD DRIVE!

We’re sponsoring a food drive at the Indiana Small Business Fair on May 11th!

Come out and help us fill up the truck for the less fortunate here in Indy.

Alright, raise your hands, how many of you were late to work this morning?
C'mon, seriously? That's all? The rest of you didn't use that genius excuse? It's the ONLY day all year you get to use that perfectly good excuse to sleep in an hour and you still made it to work on time? Sigh, I'm disappointed in you. That guy in the back with his hand raised, I tip my hat to you, sir. Good job not passing up a golden opportunity. It's like a mini-labor day in March, folks!

Here's something curious about DST: did you know that it was started because a guy in New Zeland over 100 years ago had a hobby. Yep, George Hudson was a backyard entomologist who realized that if he had a couple more hours of daylight, he could collect more bugs. So, in 1895, he presented his idea to the Wellington Philosophical Society. Ten years later in England, William Willett prposed the same thing because he hated cutting his golf game short at dusk.

Early to bed, early to rise:
We all know Ben Franklin was a go get 'em kinda guy. It was while he was in Paris at the end of the 1700's that he was disgusted by how many Parisians burned candles throughout the night and slept through the early morning, brightly lit hours. So that's when he came up with his "Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise" saying. He also wanted to shoot off cannons to wake them up every morning. Now THERE's an alarm clock you won't hit the SNOOZE button on!

DST starts because of the war:
It wasn't until 1916 that Germany and the Axis powers decided to use Willett's idea as a way of conserving coal during wartime. Britian and Europe followed suit. The next year, Russia started doing it and in 1918 the U.S. adopted DST also.

Makes the trains run on time:
Eighteenth century Europe didn't keep precise timetables. However, as a rail and communication networks began to crisscross throughout Europe, it became impossible to keep anything straight. So the adoption of the universal DST across the continent not only preserved coal, but it also helps the trains run on time.

How you can save $$:
Okay, most of us made it to work on time, so you probably have heard about DST by now anyway, so let's talk about how to SAVE YOU SOME MONEY. I thought you'd like that part.

How are those wipers working out for you? It was pretty wet this past week and you got plenty of opportunity to wear them out. How would you like for MyCarDoc to come right to your office and put on a NEW pair of wipers saving you the time and trouble of doing it yourself? We can make that happen.
NEW WIPERS INSTALLED AT YOUR HOME OR OFFICE during service for ONLY $12 (most vehicles).

How is your gas mileage doing lately? Did you see it shoot up over the weekend to nearly $3/gallon? Yowza, it was $2.89/gallon over by my house. We can help you save $$ on gas mileage.
FUEL INJECTORS CLEANED AT YOUR HOME OR OFFICE during service for ONLY $5.

BUY 3 OIL CHANGES, GET ONE FREE! That's right folks, for a limited time, you can buy THREE oil changes at regular price and I will give you gift certificates for FOUR oil changes!
